This appears to be a bug, as strip_trailing_plus seems to be a tool for NETMAP only. I assume the correct behavior would be to set the NETMAP case first and then follow it with PCAP/AFP.

Yes, correct, there is no special meaning of + in pcap or AFP. Proposed solution seems to be correct.
