The idea/aim is to have it in place for 7.0 ideally.

Can we revisit this for 7? I do see a systemd unit file after install, so is this already done? I noticed that the PPA still uses Suricata in daemon mode (-D), can we remove that if the conversion to systemd is done?

Using -D can hide some errors. So with the PPA switch to systemd, we should move away from using -D. etc/suricata.service.in shows proper pid file handling and is used in the RPM.
